HP DesignJet 5500PS 42 Color Plotter

Plotter for Posters and Technical Drawings:

The Color Plotter "HP DesignJet 5500PS" located in the public printer pool of the Computer Center in building 2b allows color plots in the following DIN-formats: A0, A1 and A2 (DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung i.e. German Institute for Standardization). The printer resolution is 1200 x 600 dpi. Dpi stands for dots per inch (2,54 cm). A typographical dot measures 1/72 inch.

The plotter accepts printer jobs in Adobe's PostScript format but not in HPGL. HPGL is a proprietary printer format of the firm Hewlett and Packard.

Use the logical printer names pubcp4a0, pubcp4a1 or pubcp4a2 in dependence of the desired DIN-format to access above mentioned plotter.

A plot lasts up to 10 minutes and the cost can range between 5 € and 20 € depending on the color composition. Therefore, the plotter is allowed to be used for official purposes only. It is reserved for the making of posters and technical drawings.

Note the following to keep the cost low:
Do not send files in "transparent" mode to the plotter (see insider tip below).
Scale the size of your printout down to 25% temporarily and check the printout on a A4 or A3 printer.
Do not send patterns of an unknown format (Web-pages for example) to the plotter directly. Instead, convert the pattern with an appropriate image processor to PostScript and check the result with Ghostview or Irvanview afterwards before you start printing with the Color Plotter "HP DesignJet 5500PS". No try and error please.
Under Windows change first the standard printer to "pubcp4a0" and then open the dokument. All printer settings are given correctly when printing only in such a way. Put after printing your application to your default printer immediately afterwards in order to avoid unwanted output.
If you want to turn a document, you make this with the page setting in the application program. The setting "landscape" in the printer driver turns the paper size but not the contents.
Plot on a page by page basis. Do not send a whole document to the plotter. Note, the selection of "document" within the program "Designer" empties the plotter paper roll.
If you send two A2 printer jobs within a time span of 2 minutes to the plotter then both plots are printed side by side. Paper can be saved in this way now and then.

Hint: Watch the printout by yourself if possible. Resort to an operator (telephone number 5005) or switch the plotter off at the rear if the plotter behaves abnormal. The access to the control panel is not allowed. Note, that all stored printer jobs are killed if you switch the plotter off.

Bigger printer jobs should be announced in advance at the UCO (telephone number 5005).

The color plotter "HP DesignJet 5500PS" is supported from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Insider tip for the printout of EPS-files (Encapsulated Postscript files): EPS-data need a so-called bounding box to be printed properly. It is generated by the used application normally. The bounding boxes measure 1191*1684, 1684*2384 and 2384*3370 points for DIN-A2, A1 and A0 respectively. EPS-files without bounding box cannot be printed.

The broad of the paper roll is 36 inch, corresponds to 91.4 cm or 2600 points. At the both sides is a not printable range from 0,7 cm. The maximally printable width amounts to in approximately 89,9 cm or 2549 points. The not printable range at the top side are 3,5 cm and at the down side 0,7 cm.
The pre-setting of the printer queue "pubcp4a0" is adapted on the broad of the role of 36 inch.
The pinboard for poster by DESY are 92 cm width and 132 cm high. That results in a maximum range in the bounding boxes of 2549*3700 points.

Der Farb-Plotter "HP DesignJet 5500PS", der im öffentlichen Druckerbereich des Computer Centers im Gebäude 2b untergebracht ist, erlaubt Farbdrucke in den folgenden DIN-Formaten: A0, A1 und A2 (DIN steht für Deutsches Institut für Normung). Die Auflösung des Druckers beträgt 1200 x 600 dpi. "Dpi" steht für "dots per inch" oder in deutsch für "Punkte pro Zoll (2,54 cm)". Ein typographischer Punkt entspricht 1/72 Zoll.

Der Plotter nimmt Druckjobs im Adobe PostScript Format an, aber kein HPGL. HPGL ist ein patentrechtlich geschütztes Druckformat der Firma Hewlett und Packard.

Benutzen Sie die logischen Druckernamen pubcp4a0, pubcp4a1 oder pubcp4a2 in Abhängigkeit vom gewünschten DIN-Format, um den oben erwähnten Plotter anzusprechen.

Ein Plot dauert bis zu 10 Minuten und kostet je nach Farbzusammensetzung zwischen 5 € und 20 €. Der Plotter darf deshalb nur für dienstliche Zwecke benutzt werden. Er ist für die Anfertigung von Postern und technischen Zeichnungen vorgesehen.

Beachten Sie folgende Punkte, um die Kosten gering zu halten:
Senden Sie keine Dateien im "Transparent"-Modus an den Plotter (siehe Tip für Insider unten).
Verringern Sie vorübergehend die Größe des Plots auf 25% und testen Sie das Druckbild mit einem A4 oder A3 Drucker.
Vorlagen mit unbekanntem Format (z.B. Web-Pages) nicht direkt auf den Drucker schicken. Konvertieren Sie statt dessen die Vorlagen mit einem geeigneten Programm ins PostScript-Format und überprüfen Sie anschießend das Ergebnis mit Ghostview oder Ifanview, bevor Sie mit dem Farb-Plotter "HP DesignJet 5500PS" drucken. Arbeiten Sie nicht nach der "Try and Error"-Methode.
Setzen sie unter Windows den Standarddrucker auf "pubcp4a0" und öffnen Sie dann erst das Dokument. Nur so werden beim Drucken alle Einstellungen richtig mitgegeben. Setzen Sie nach dem Drucken aus der benutzten Anwendung anschließend auf Ihren Default-Drucker zurück, um unbeabsichtigte Plots zu vermeiden.
Wenn Sie ein Dokument drehen wollen, machen Sie dies mit der Seiteneinstellung im Anwendungsprogramm, oder versuchen Sie es mit der Einstellung "Rotate" auf der Seite "Page Layout" im Druckertreiber. Die Einstellung "Landscape" dreht das Papierformat, aber nicht den Inhalt.
Plotten Sie Seite für Seite und nicht ein ganzes Dokument auf einmal. Beachten Sie, daß die Auswahl "Dokument" innerhalb des Programmes "Designer" dazu führt, daß das Plotterpapier abgerollt wird.
Wenn Sie innerhalb von zwei Minuten zwei A2-Plots an den Plotter schicken, werden diese nebeneinander gedruckt. Auf diese Weise kann man mitunter teures Spezialpapier einsparen.

Hinweis: Beobachten Sie den Druckvorgang nach Möglichkeit. Wenden Sie sich an einen Operateur (Tel. 5005) oder schalten Sie den Plotter an der Rückseite aus, falls sich der Plotter abnormal verhält. Der Zugriff auf das Bedienfeld des Plotters ist, ausser zum löschen des Druckauftrages, nicht erlaubt. Beachten Sie, daß alle gespeicherten Druckjobs gelöscht werden, wenn Sie den Plotter ausschalten.

Größere Druckjobs sollten Sie beim UCO vorher ankündigen (Tel. 5005).

Der Farb-Plotter "HP DesignJet 5500PS" wird von Montag bis Freitag von 8 bis 16:30 Uhr und am Sonnabend und Sonntag von 10 bis 16:30 Uhr unterstützt.

Insider-Tip für den Druck von EPS-Dateien (Encapsulated Postscript): EPS-Daten benötigen eine sogenannte "Bounding Box", um gedruckt werden zu können. EPS-Dateien ohne "Bounding Box" können nicht gedruckt werden.

Die Breite der Papierrolle beträgt 36 inch, das entspricht 91,4 cm oder 2600 Punkten. An den beiden Seiten ist ein nicht bedruckbarer Bereich von 0,7 cm Breite. Die maximal druckbare Breite beträgt in etwa 89,9 cm bzw. 2549 Punkte. Der nicht bedruckte Bereich an der oberen Seite beträgt 3,5 cm, an der untere Seite 0,7cm.
Die Voreinstellung der Druckerqueue "pubcp4a0" ist auf die Rollenbreite von 36 Inch angepasst.
Die Stellwände für Poster bei DESY sind 92 cm breit und 132 cm hoch. Das ergibt einen maximalen Druckbereich in der Bounding Box von 2549*3700 Punkten bei 0,7 cm Randbreite an allen Seiten.
