Upgrading older versions of DESY Linux to DESY Linux 5

To upgrade from an older version of DESY Linux to DESY Linux 5, please follow the checklist below:
  1. Disk size considerations.
You will need at least 8Gb of disk space on the system disk to be able to install DESY Linux 5. A disk size of at least 10 GB is highly recommended.

  2. (Re-)register your machine.
In order to install DESY Linux 5 on your machine, the corresponding equipment database entry must be updated. Please send email to linux@desy.de to get this done. General instructions for registering can be found on the PC registration web page.

Issues to be aware of when requesting a (re-)registration are as follows:

    1. Do you want to keep existing data ?
Without beeing told otherwise, the installation process will repartition your system disk (/dev/[h,s]da) and wipe out all data on that disk. Data on other disks in the system is not touched.

If you want to keep your existing partitioning scheme and your data e.g. on your '/data' partition, please state this explicitely when (re-)registering your machine. We will then set up the installation process to keep the partitioning scheme and preserve data on non-system partitions. Data on the root partition ('/') and other system partitions (eg. '/tmp', '/var', ..) will still be lost.

Preserving data works only with systems that run DESY Linux and are maintained by the 'salad' framework. Also, the root-partition must have a size of at least 4GB for the installation to work. Of course, it's always a good idea to have a backup of important data.

    2. What is the type of your system disk type ?
When (re-)registering, you need to specify the type of system disk you are using. Please state, if it is seen by the operating system as IDE (/dev/hda) or SCSI (/dev/sda).

    3. Systems with small disks.
On systems with disks smaller than 10GB you might want to have the application software packages installed as links into AFS. This was the default on previous DESY Linux releases. If you want this, please state that you want the service flag 'asw-afs' to be set for the machine.

  3. Get the installation media.
DESY Linux 5 can be installed using various mechanisms, including Not all media is supported by all hardware. Known problems have been described on the known issues web page. You can get the installation media from the DESY Linux 5 Boot Media web page.

  4. Install your system.
After the last changes to the equipment database have been done by IT, it takes one hour to propagate the changes. After this waiting period, proceed as follows:
    1. Insert the installation media and boot it.
    2. At the prompt, type 'install'. The hardware discovery will start and, if successfull, in turn initiate SuSE's installer, YaST version 2. The initial prompt will not appear, if you are using PXE boot to install DESY Linux 5.
    3. YaST will then ask you to accept the installation settings it presents in a menue and start the installation. Use the mouse to make the appropriate choice. If there is no mouse (as on a workgroup server), use the 'enter' and 'left/right arrow' keys to make the selection.
    4. After the confirmation, the installation runs unattended until it completes successfully. Mostly. If there are problems, please contact linux@desy.de.

In case of questions or comments, please sent an email to linux@desy.de.
