DESY Linux 5 Release Notes

Mission

The mission of DESY Linux 5 development is provide a modern, flexible, stable, maintainable, all purpose Linux for use at DESY. This includes support for every server and desktop hardware which follows established DESY Standards as we had in previous releases, plus extended support and reduced network dependencies for autonomous computers in control or mobile applications.

Base Distribution and Tools

DESY Linux 5 is based on the SuSE 8.2 Professional distribution. SuSE's commitment is to support this distribution with bug fixes and security updates until at least April 2005.

We will be using in house mechanisms (AMS, wboom, QIP, YP) for PC registration and creation of installation prerequisites. An automated, slim base installation will be performed by SuSE's YaST 2 and steered by our configuration management tools. DESY (Hamburg) customisation (cluster, group and host specific), post installation, maintenance and administration will be done by a combination of our in hose tools AMS, wboom and salad.
