Linux Kernels up to and including 2.4.25 have a security bug that allows local users to escalate their privilleges to those of 'root'. New DESY Linux 5 kernels have been integrated into the installation repository and will be distributed on April 20 during the nightly update. You can find more information on te
'cvs' packages with RPM release numbers smaller than 103 contain a version of CMS that has a severe memory leak. The installation repository has been upgraded to SuSE's new version cvs-1.11.5-103. Installed systems will receive the new packet on April 17.

A new version of Perl, 5.8.2, has been made available on default installations for user tests. We plan to make 5.8.2 the default Perl version on Wed, 3nd of March. You can find the new version at /opt/products/perl/5.8.2/bin/perl.
The X server, distributed with the XFree-4.3.0 RPMs on DESY Linux 5 has a
security bug that can be exploited for at least local privillege escalation
and thus root access to the system.
Due to the newly discovered do_munremap security bug in the Linux kernel, we needed to upgrade the DL5 kernel to version 2.4.25. The installation repository has been upgraded on Feb 19'th. New kernels were distributed to installed and accessible systems tonight. To activate the new kernels, please reboot your systems.
Tonight, new software has been installed that fixed some of the 'known issues'. Affected software packages were xemacs, cmz, and chxlocal.

The DESY Linux 5 installation kernel now supports the Adaptec I2O RAID array. New installation media are available. Please see 'Known issues' for details.
To the left, you now will find a link to a page detailing known issues within DESY Linux 5. Here you can check, whether a problem you have encountered while working with DL 5 is already known and what state it is in. We will attempt to keep the page updated as known issues are fixed and (less and less..) new ones are reported.
Please find some initial installation instructions using the 'Automated Installation' and/or 'Creating Installation Media' links to the left. (UE)
The problems reported on the Linux User Meeting 27 are now fixed. The ATI Sapphire 9200 SE is now recognized automatically by the installation process and the 'chxlocal -default' command. (UE)
At the Linux User Meeting number 27, IT announced that DESY Linux 5 is now available for public beta-testing. The slides from the meeting can be found in the 'meetings' section on the DESY Linux main page .
