2005 Jul 25: New Version of OpenOffice available.

Now OpenOffice version 1.1.4 is available on DL5 and SL3. On Aug 1th we make it to the default.

2005 Jul 18: dl5ref discontinued.

Since we went public with DESY Linux 5 on November 4, 2003, we provided public access to a reference machine named 'dl5ref'. This service is no longer available. Please use the public login cluster 'pal' instead.

Now a new TeX package latex-Beamerclass depends on pgf and xcolor is available.

2005 Jul 15: New xemacs version 2.4.17 available

Now a new version of xemacs is available which fixes some problems e.g. the using of the find funktion. Currently this version is not set to default. Please test this new version and give some beedback. At Jul 31th we make this new one to the default.

SuSE has released a number of security and bug fixes for their packages which have been made available for new installations and are currently beeing distributed to already installed systems.

Affected packages are 'bzip2' and 'telnet' .

SuSE has released a number of security and bug fixes for their packages which have been made available for new installations and are currently beeing distributed to already installed systems.

Affected packages are 'kdelibs3', 'libtiff', 'tiff' and 'xv' .

2005 May 25: 'locate' for AFS group directories.

With DESY Linux 4, the 'locate' command residing in /usr/local/bin/locate made separately generated databases reflecting the contents of group volumes available for searching.

Upon request, we have made this functionality available with DESY Linux 5, too, by supplying an /opt/products RPM. Due to naming conflicts with the 'locate' command from SuSE, a new command, 'alocate' has been introduced that resides on /opt/products/bin/alocate.

The mechanism creating the external databases was left unchanged.

Currently the LaTeX packages lineno and feynmf are on DL5 available.

2005 Mar 29: New version of Lyx (1.3.5) available.

During this week we provide both versions, old (1.3.0) and new one (1.3.5), to use the new version type the command '/opt/products/bin/lyx1.3.5'. Lyx 1.3.0 had problems by using mathematical symbols. Next week the default will be switch to version 1.3.5. The old one will be obsolete.

2005 Feb 08: Real Player plugin for mozilla.

Due to security problems with version 8 of 'real player', we will remove the real player plugins for the 'mozilla' browser from DESY Linux 5 on Wednesday, February 9.

We are working on integrating version 10 of the real player product into DESY Linux 5 and will re-integrate the plugins it this is available.

2005 Jan 24: New kernel version.

Since version 2.4.29 of the kernel is now available, we upgraded our kernel RPM in the DESY Linux 5 installation repository to 2.4.29-z1.

2005 Jan 13: Fix for SuSE application software.

SuSE has released a fix for their 'kdegraphics3-fax'. package which has been made available for new installations and is currently beeing distributed to already installed systems.

2005 Jan 12: New default version of mozilla

On january 24th we will switch the mozilla default to version 1.7.5

2005 Jan 11: New kernel for DESY Linux 5.

Since a number of security-related kernel problems have been published during the last days, the DESY Linux 5 repository has been upgraded to a new kernel, a patched version of 2.4.28.

Currently, the new kernel is available for new installations. We are working on an upgrade of the installed base.

2004 Dec 01: Metapost available with DESY Linux

SuSE's Metapost is now avaliable with the default DESY Linux 5 installation. Also, it is currently beeing distributed to already installed systems.

2004 Nov 25: New default version of Openoffice

We will switch the openoffice default to version 1.1.3 (en) by our daily/nightly update mechanism at 2004 Dec 06. The version 1.1.2 is known to be buggy.

2004 Nov 01: New default version of mathematica

We will switch the mathematica default to version 5.01 by our daily/nightly update mechanism. The version 5 is known to be buggy.

2004 Oct 29: SuSE Software update

SuSE has released (security) fixes for their 'aaa_base', 'man' and 'tetex' products.

The new RPMs have been integrated into our installation repository and are beeing distributed by the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 Oct 25: SuSE Software update

SuSE has released a security fix for their 'libtiff' product. The new RPM has been integrated into our installation repository and is beeing distributed by the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 Oct 20: Zephyr available

The Messaging System Zephyr is now available. This installation is 'asis' and will stay unsupported in the future.

2004 Oct 13: New default version of maple

On november 1st we will switch the maple default to version 9.5.

2004 Oct 13: DL 5 based public login service

IT now offers a new cluster of systems for general public login services. The machines are new Dual Processor systems running DESY Linux 5. They have been tested internally for some time now. You can access them using the 'ssh palx' command.

As DESY Linux 5 now is IT's production Linux system, the old DESY Linux 4 based public login systems, currently accessible under the name 'pal', will be phased out over the next months after further announcements. Please migrate to the new systems.

2004 Oct 08: SuSE security updates.

SuSE has released security upgrades for 'openmotif' and 'openmotif-devel' . The new RPMs have been integrated into our installation repository and are beeing distributed by the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 Oct 05: 'realplayer' available.

'RealPlayer' from RealNetworks now is available from within /opt/products.

2004 Sep 29: SuSE security update.

SuSE has issued a security update for their 'mc' package. The new version has been integrated into our DL5 and SuSE 8.2 repositories and is beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 Sep 21: Open Office 1.1.2 available.

Version 1.1.2 of OpenOffice is now available as a DESY application software package. It is installed in addition to version 1.0.2, which is the still default. You can switch between versions using the 'ini' command. Please test the new version and give us feedback. If no obstacles are reported, 1.1.2 will become the new default version in October.

2004 Sep 20: Fixes for SuSE software.

SuSE has released patches for the application software provided with their release. We have updated our DL 5 / SuSE 8.2 repositories accordingly. Packages installed with DL 5 are beeing moved to installed systems using the daily/nightly update mechanism.

Affected packages are: 'gdk-pixbuf (again..)', 'XFree86-libs'. Please restart your X Server to activate the changes to the X11 libraries.

2004 Aug 25: DESY Linux 5 now is our production release.

At the Linux User Meeting today, we announced that DESY Linux 5 now is our maintained production system. DESY Linux 4 is beeing retired.

2004 Aug 10: Maple Version 9.5 available.

Version 9.5 of Maple is now available for testing via /opt/products. A problem with printing is fixed and there are some new features. You can access the new version using the 'ini maple95' command.

2004 Aug 04: Mozilla version 1.7 now available.

Version 1.7 of Mozilla is now available via /opt/products and is now the default browser. Please restart your browser.

2004 Aug 04: "Root" Versions can be chosen using 'ini'

The database of the 'ini' command has been updated and the new version has been distributed. As a result, you can now switch between different versions of "Root" using the 'ini' command.

2004 Aug 03: Maple 9.5 now available

A new version of Maple, 9.5, has been made available in addition to versions 7 and 8 which have been part of DL 5 for some time. Please test the new version as it will be made the default later on.

To ease access to the new version, the 'ini' tool has been adapted to provide the environment for Maple 9.5.

2004 July 26: k5cron client upgraded to version 1.4

After some internal testing, we are now upgrading the 'k5cron' client to version 1.4. New packages are currently beeing installed using the nightly/daily update mechanism.

2004 July 22: ghostscript version 8.14 now available

We have made version 8.14 of ghostscript available as a DESY product. In order to access this version you need to use the /opt/products/bin path explicitely or use the command 'ini gs8.14'.

The default version on DESY Linux 5 is still version 7.05. As ghostscript nowerdays is a central part of the distribution, replacing it is difficult as other programs and tools require it. We therefore provide version 8.14 as an add-on that you can use, if the default version is unable to handle your data.

2004 July 16: Security patch from SuSE: kopete

SuSE has released an update for their 'kopete' package. A fixed version of the package, kopete-0.6.1a-102, has been integrated into the installation repository and is beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 June 30: RedHat c/c++ compiler version 3.2.3 available

We have made version 3.2.3 of RedHat's gcc/g++ compiler suite available in /opt/products. These compilers are intended for people wanting to compile software from their collaborations that has been developed for the the RedHat based GRID/HEP environment.

2004 June 24: Security patch from SuSE: less and libpng

SuSE has released updates for their 'less' and 'libpng' packages. Fixed versions of the packages, libpng-1.2.5-187 and less-378-77, have been integrated into the installation repository and are beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 June 16: Security patch from SuSE: permissions

SuSE has released an update for their 'permissions' package. A fixed version of the package, permissions-2004.5.21-4, has been integrated into the installation repository and is beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 June 14: Corporate Time available

An RPM for the 'Corporate Time' product has been prepared and is currently beeing distributed using the daily update mechanism. It provides the 'Ctime' command and thus the client to CT.

Please note that only _one_ instance of the Corporate Time client should be active at any time. Running multiple instances might result in garbled CT configuration files.

2004 June 11: SuSE patch for 'cvs'

SuSE has released an update for their 'cvs' package. A fixed version of the package, cvs-1.11.5-114, has been integrated into the installation repository and is beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 June 8: New DESY application software available

Within the /opt/products directory tree you now have access to the following application software packages:

  • root version 3.10/02.
  • root version 4.00/04.
  • geant 4 including dawn. (Initial test version.)
  • gcc 3.4.
  • GKS 3.3. (As unsupported as it has been for some years now..)

2004 June 7: 'raidtools' and 'rsync' packages updated

SuSE has released updates for their 'raidtools' and 'rsync' packages. Fixed version of these packages, raidtools-1.00.3-229 and rsync-2.6.2-14, have been integrated into the installation repository and are beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 May 26: Security upgrade for 'kdelibs'

SuSE has released a security fix for the 'KDE' software. A bug allows remote attackers to manipulate files with the privilleges of the user. A fixed version of 'kdelibs', kdelibs3-3.1.1-139, has been integrated into the installation repository and is beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 May 21: CVS upgrade

SuSE has released a security fix for the 'cvs' software. A bug allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands with the privilleges of the user. A fixed version of 'cvs', cvs-1.11.5-112, has been integrated into the installation repository and is beeing distributed via the daily/nightly update mechanism.

2004 May 18: Some fixes in SuSE application software

SuSE has released some security/bug fixes for their application software. Using the update mechanism, we will therefore upgrade the packages 'sharutils', 'utempter' and 'mc' to the recent RPM release levels.

2004 Apr 21: Kernel upgrade to 2.4.26-z1: Please reboot

Due to the kernel vulnerability reported on April 19'th, systems that are accessible via the nightly update mechanism have been upgraded to kernel version 2.4.26-z1. Please reboot your systems to activate the new kernel.

2004 Apr 21: DESY Linux 5 now in 'early rollout' state

As announced in the DESY Linux User Meeting (see the "Meetings" section) today, DESY Linux 5 is now in the 'early rollout' state. The system is ready now to be installed on both desktop and server systems.

2004 Apr 19: Kernel upgrade to 2.4.26-z1

Linux Kernels up to and including 2.4.25 have a security bug that allows local users to escalate their privilleges to those of 'root'. 2004 Apr 16: CVS update

'cvs' packages with RPM release numbers smaller than 103 contain a version of CMS that has a severe memory leak. The installation repository has been upgraded to SuSE's new version cvs-1.11.5-103. Installed systems will receive the new packet on April 17.

2004 Apr 5: SuSE security update: kdelibs3

'kdeprint' has a bug that allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands under the privileges of the user calling 'kdeprint'. SuSE has provided updates which have been integrated into the installation repository. Installed systems will receive the new package via the nightly update mechanism tonight.

2004 Mar 17: gcc version 3.3.3 now default

Tonight, version 3.3.3 of the gcc compiler has been made the default compiler as announced last week. Versions 3.3 and 3.3.1 have been removed due to disk space considerations. 'ini' has been adapted.
Also, we have started to remove perl 5.8.0 since version 5.8.1 is now the default perl version. This move has been announced on March 4'th.

2004 Mar 09: New gcc version

Tonight, version 3.3.3 of the gcc compiler will be installed. This release fixes some bugs present in the DL 5 default gcc compiler version , 3.3.1. 3.3.3 will be made the default compiler on Wed, March 17, unless users vote against this move.

2004 Mar 04: New Perl version

Tonight, Perl version 5.8.2 has been made the default version as announced on Feb 26. Perl 5.8.0 is still available for now, but will be removed due to space considerations on March 17, unless user requirements prohibit this.

2004 Feb 27: New X server RPMs, again..

Tonight, new RPMs of the X server and libraries have been distributed. The reason was that SuSE's RPMs did not fix the vulnerability described in a earlier news message. The new RPMs were created at DESY Zeuthen and the vulnerability could not be reproduced after their installation.

2004 Feb 26: New Perl version

A new version of Perl, 5.8.2, has been made available on default installations for user tests. We plan to make 5.8.2 the default Perl version on Wed, 3nd of March. You can find the new version at /opt/products/perl/5.8.2/bin/perl.

2004 Feb 25: Security upgrade: XFree

The X server, distributed with the XFree-4.3.0 RPMs on DESY Linux 5 has a security bug that can be exploited for at least local privillege escalation and thus root access to the system.
Affected RPM versions are XFree-4.3.0-115 and lower versions. To address this issue, the X Server on DESY Linux 5 systems has been upgraded tonight by the nightly update to version XFree-4.3.0-120.
Please restart your X servers by logging out and in again.

2004 Feb 20: Kernel upgrades

Due to the newly discovered do_munremap security bug in the Linux kernel, we needed to upgrade the DL5 kernel to version 2.4.25. The installation repository has been upgraded on Feb 19'th. New kernels were distributed to installed and accessible systems tonight. To activate the new kernels, please reboot your systems.

2004 Feb 18: Some bug fixes

Tonight, new software has been installed that fixed some of the 'known issues'. Affected software packages were xemacs, cmz, and chxlocal.

2004 Feb 12: New installation CD and memory stick images

New images of the DL 5 installation CD and USB stick have been made available. Users that whish to install systems with Adaptek I2O RAID disks should upgrade to these media. The media are stored at tux1:/distro/DL5/dl5boot.

2004 Feb 10: Nightly update tonight: Mail

Tonight, the nightly update will attempt to correct the 'postfix' email configuration on already installed DL 5 machines. New installations will receive the updated configuration automatically.

2004 Jan 29: Nightly update tonight

Tonight, all installed DL 5 machines will receive a software and configuration update upgrading them to current state of the installation repository.

2004 Jan 28: Adaptec I2O RAID array supported

The DESY Linux 5 installation kernel now supports the Adaptec I2O RAID array. New installation media are available. Please see 'Known issues' for details.

2004 Jan 27: New Known Issues page

To the left, you now will find a link to a page detailing known issues within DESY Linux 5. Here you can check, whether a problem you have encountered while working with DL 5 is already known and what state it is in. We will attempt to keep the page updated as known issues are fixed and (less and less..) new ones are reported.

2004 Jan 26: Installation documentation updated

Please find some initial installation instructions using the 'Automated Installation' and/or 'Creating Installation Media' links to the left. (UE)

2004 Jan 22: ATI Sapphire graphics card now supported

The problems reported on the Linux User Meeting 27 are now fixed. The ATI Sapphire 9200 SE is now recognized automatically by the installation process and the 'chxlocal -default' command. (UE)

2004 Jan 21: Public Beta announced

At the Linux User Meeting number 27, IT announced that DESY Linux 5 is now available for public beta-testing. The slides from the meeting can be found in the 'meetings' section on the DESY Linux main page .

In the material presented there, you can find detailed instructions about installation media and the process of installing DESY Linux 5.

2003 Nov 04: Going Public

We are entering the public phase of DL5 development by releasing this preliminary documentation and opening the dl5ref.desy.de reference and development host.
