Linux PC Registration

You've got a PC? You want DESY Linux on it? Congratulations!

However, before DESY's automatic Linux installation procedure can run on your PC, we need to register some information about it and distribute that to the relevant servers and services. In particular, we need an entry in the equipment database, the PCs must belong to a netgroup, and a bootp record must be supplied on the bootp server.

The registration procedure will take care that your PC has all required access permissions to central servers and maybe other computers of your group. Due to the delicateness of this, we can only accept registration forms from group administrators who are known to us. These are listed on http://www.desy.de/cgi-bin/admins.

Every group running Linux PCs at DESY has at least one Linux Technical Administrator who is acquainted with the registration and installation procedure. The canonical way of registration is that this group administrator (please contact him now if you are an end user) sends an email with the information requested below to zdv-install@desy.de.

Until we have an automated interface, this registration process requires synchronous activity within -IT-, i.e. you cannot start the installation before we have entered these data. You will receive an e-mail as soon as the registration is complete and all required services are aware of your new PC. After that message, you can start installation.

When providing the requested information, please stick to the format which is described in the examples below! This allows us to speed the installation procedure by simply copying the data without further searches and/or modifications.

For our equipment database, which will be connected to the Asset Management System in the near future, we need the identity of your PC. All PCs purchased by DESY have INVENTORY numbers. All PCs - usually desktops - which are provided by DESY IT should have already pcx-numbers. All others need one to be uniquely identified. xs

In case your PC has no pcx-number yet, ask your Linux group administrator to contact the User Consulting Office (UCO)!!!

Please make sure to include the PC in the registration form below. We need it to finish the registration procedure and to prepare the installation. This holds for every PC which is operated on the DESY site. Click here for a description of special features (' service flags').

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0] Every PC which is operated within DESY's infrastructure (network, etc.)
is required to have a unique number. By means of this so-called PCX-number
the PC can be identified within DESY's Asset Management System.
PCs bought through DESY usually have already a generic name 'pcxNNNN' which
is guaranteed to be unique. Please enter it as
PCX-Number. If your device does not happen to have one,
ask your group administrator to contact UCO at 5005.
They will send you a sticker which should be pinned to the front of the
     PC-box.
    Example:PCX-Number: pcx4711

[1] The Hostname of your PC. It must be typed exactly as
registered in the DNS system (netgroups are case sensitive, and we strongly
recommend to only use lowercase letters!). Omit the domain name. We will
ask for an alternate hostname in case of conflict with existing
     installations.
     Example:Hostname: monica
     Example:Alias:

[2] The network segment administrator has to create the DNS
entries. The IP number should already be
registered under the given hostname, otherwise the installation
may be delayed by a day or two. http://www-it.desy.de/network/intranet/services/dns/beauftragte.html
has a list of segment administrators at DESY. Example:IP number: 131.169.47.11

[3] Please enter the MAC address it without colons (exactly
     12 digits; no dots).
The MAC address is the hardware address of your Ethernet card. It can be
read from the network card using a DOS based tool or by booting from the
Linux installation disk and looking into "kernel messages". DESY PCs have a
label on their back which contains (among others) the MAC address.
     Example:MAC address: 00E0189094A4

[5] PCs bought by DESY carry an aluminum badge with a 7 digit DESY Inventory
number. This is needed for your BA if you ever want to buy a new component
for this box, and we need it to track the PC over time. Please give the
number on the computer (not the monitor). If the PC was bought elsewhere,
     leave it empty.
     Example:Inventory: 1031487

[6] How much Memory is in there? This may limit what we can
do especially for older devices. Numbers in [MB] please!
     Example:Memory: 256

[7] User data are entered into the configuration database to allow maintenance
by the desktop group and operations staff in case of problems. Desktops are
typically bound to an individual user. User names within the DESY domain are
unique. So please provide the User Name or user name of
the group administrator instead. As Phone number the DESY
extension is needed. The Location is always that one of
the PC. Use exclusively the format "building/room" and omit special
description such as "Hall West". "Helgoland", "Cantina", etc.
     Example:User name: gellrich
     Example:Phone: 2732
     Example:Location: 2a/219

[8] let us know to which DESY Group you belong.

[9] The name of the Cluster to which this PC shall be added.
If you are unsure, you can read it from /etc/local/cluster on an existing
Desktop PC. This defines the specifics of your installation. You can only
install your PC if we already have a cluster definition on the installation
server, e.g. "h1", "hasy", "herab", "zeus", "flc", etc.
     Example:Cluster: herab

[10] The serial number might help to identify the computer.
     If possible please add it.
     Example:Serial Nr: 130400019
